Wisdom tooth removal

Wisdom teeth are a different job from a routine extraction. They often come in sideways or only partially break through the gum, which means the clinic needs surgical skill and usually an x-ray to plan the removal rather than just pulling a straightforward tooth.

  • Wisdom tooth causing recurring pain or swelling at the back of the jaw
  • Impacted tooth that hasn't fully erupted
  • Repeated gum infections around a partially erupted wisdom tooth
  • Wisdom teeth crowding other teeth or affecting orthodontic treatment

Straightforward cases might be handled by a general dentist, but impacted or awkwardly angled teeth are usually referred to a clinic with oral and maxillofacial surgery experience.

What it costs

Cost depends heavily on how the tooth is positioned. A fully erupted wisdom tooth is priced closer to a normal extraction, while an impacted tooth needing surgical removal, stitches and a longer recovery costs more. Removing multiple wisdom teeth in one sitting is usually cheaper per tooth than separate visits.

FAQ

Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. Wisdom teeth that come in straight, fully erupt, and don't cause pain or crowding can often be left alone and just monitored.
How do I know if my wisdom tooth is impacted?
An x-ray at a dental clinic will show whether the tooth is angled, stuck under the gum, or pressing against neighbouring teeth.
How long is recovery after wisdom tooth surgery?
Simple removals heal in a few days. Surgical extraction of an impacted tooth can take a week or more for swelling and discomfort to settle.
