What is scaling and polishing?

Scaling and polishing is a preventive dental cleaning procedure that removes hardened plaque (tartar) from tooth surfaces using an ultrasonic scaler, then polishes teeth to reduce staining and bacterial buildup.

Scaling and polishing is the standard preventive cleaning dentists perform during routine check-ups. The procedure has two main parts: scaling removes tartar (calcified plaque) that accumulates on teeth above and just below the gum line using an ultrasonic scaler, which vibrates to dislodge deposits without damaging enamel. Once tartar is removed, the dentist polishes the teeth with a mild abrasive paste, smoothing the tooth surface and removing surface stains.

This routine cleaning differs from deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), which treats gum disease by cleaning below the gum line and smoothing root surfaces. Scaling and polishing targets prevention and maintenance in patients with healthy gums.

Dentists across Ghana recommend scaling and polishing every 6 months for most patients because plaque hardens into tartar within weeks and cannot be removed by brushing alone. Regular removal prevents tartar buildup that leads to cavities, gum inflammation, and eventual tooth loss. Patients with heavier tartar accumulation or a history of gum issues may need the procedure more frequently.
