What is osseointegration?
Osseointegration is the biological fusion of jaw bone directly to the surface of a dental implant post, forming a stable foundation that must fully heal before a crown can be attached.
When a dental implant post is placed into the jaw, the surrounding bone does not immediately accept it as part of the body. Instead, bone cells gradually grow toward and around the implant surface in a process called osseointegration. Over time, new bone tissue forms and bonds directly to the implant material, typically titanium or zirconia, creating a permanent attachment that functions like a natural tooth root.
This biological integration is why implant treatment requires a waiting period. The jaw needs time, usually three to six months, for bone to fully heal and fuse around the post. During this time, the implant must remain undisturbed and covered (in most cases). Once osseointegration is complete and confirmed by your dentist, the implant becomes stable enough to support a crown, bridge, or denture without risk of shifting or failing.
Without proper osseointegration, an implant cannot support a restoration. If bone does not bond adequately to the post, the implant may loosen, cause pain, or need removal. Success depends on bone quality, implant design, surgical technique, and the patient's healing ability. Smokers and people with untreated gum disease often experience slower or incomplete osseointegration.
