Fluoride treatment is a professional dental application where a dentist or hygienist applies a concentrated fluoride solution or gel to tooth surfaces to strengthen enamel and reduce the risk of cavities.
A fluoride treatment is a topical application of concentrated fluoride compounds applied directly to tooth enamel by a dental professional. Unlike the small amount of fluoride in toothpaste and water, clinical treatments use much higher concentrations to deliver stronger protective benefits in a single application.
The treatment works by remineralizing the enamel layer, making it more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and dietary sugars that cause decay. When fluoride is absorbed into the enamel structure, it forms a harder, more durable surface that is less likely to develop cavities. This is particularly valuable in children whose permanent teeth are still developing and whose enamel may not yet be fully mature.
Fluoride treatments are commonly applied during routine checkups, especially for younger patients. The procedure is quick and painless. A dentist or dental hygienist applies the fluoride as a gel, foam, or varnish, often with a pleasant flavour. The patient typically avoids eating or drinking for 30 minutes after treatment to allow the fluoride to set properly.
Children who are prone to decay, have visible signs of early tooth damage, or live in areas without fluoridated water are good candidates for regular fluoride treatments. Many pediatric dental clinics in Ghana include fluoride treatment as part of their preventive care routine to help establish strong dental foundations early in life.
