What are clear aligners and Invisalign?

Clear aligners are custom-fitted plastic trays designed to gradually move teeth into proper alignment. Unlike fixed braces, which are bonded to teeth, aligners are removable appliances that patients wear over their upper and lower teeth. Invisalign is the most widely recognized brand, though other clear aligner systems exist in the orthodontic market.

The treatment works in stages. A dentist or orthodontist takes impressions or digital scans of the patient's teeth and bite, then uses this information to plan a series of incremental movements. Each custom aligner is worn for 1-2 weeks before moving to the next one in the sequence. Over the course of treatment, which typically spans 6 to 24 months depending on the case, the aligners progressively guide teeth into their target positions.

Clear aligners suit patients with mild to moderate crowding, spacing, or bite concerns. They are most effective for adults and older teens with fully erupted teeth. Common advantages include improved aesthetics during treatment (the aligners are nearly invisible), easier oral hygiene compared to fixed braces, and no dietary restrictions since they are removed for eating. Patients must commit to wearing the aligners 20-22 hours per day for results to occur on schedule. Those with severe bite problems or complex tooth movements may require traditional braces or a combination of treatments.
